Prayer Flags are flown to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. The practice of putting up prayer flags dates back to the 11th century and has a lot of significance.
What is the significance of Prayer Flags?
TRADITIONALLY, PRAYER FLAGS ARE USED TO PROMOTE PEACE, COMPASSION, STRENGTH, AND WISDOM. THE FLAGS DO NOT CARRY PRAYERS TO GODS, WHICH IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION; RATHER, THE TIBETANS BELIEVE THE PRAYERS AND MANTRAS WILL BE BLOWN BY THE WIND TO SPREAD THE GOOD WILL AND COMPASSION INTO THE SURROUNDING AREA.

How does it work ?
- Once the payment is completed, we will put up the prayer flag with your name on it within 7 working days. Once completed we will provide you photos of your prayer flag being personalized and put up.
Why have you chosen Swayambhunath Stupa?
- We have chosen to hang the prayer flags at Swayambhunath Stupa since the site is highly regarded as one of the most auspicious stupas in Nepal. Additionally, since the stupa is located on a high hill and overlooks the entire Kathmandu valley; locals believe it is the best site to hang prayers flags due to the constant wind in the area.
Can I choose the color of my prayer flags?
- You cannot choose the color of your prayer flags as they come bundled in rolls. Tibetan prayer flags are bright and beautiful, but their colours aren’t just for show. Each hue signifies an element — and the flags are always arranged in a specific order, from left to right: blue, white, red, green and yellow. Blue represents the sky, white represents the air, red symbolizes fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes earth. All five colours together signify balance.
How long do you take to hang the prayer flags?
- Once the payment is processed, please allow us a maximum of 7 working days to hang your personalized prayer flags. During this time, we will ensure the personalization of your flags and also ensure the proper prayer ritual is completed before hanging your flag. Upon completion, we will notify you via email.
What evidence is provided of my personalized prayer flags at the Stupa?
Once your prayer flags are ready, we will email you HD photographs of the exact spot where your personalized prayer flags are hung. You can also request for your photos to be framed in a traditional Nepali hand engraved frame so that you can hang in on your wall. However, the cost of the frame and mailing it to you would be additional.
Do you accept debit/credit cards or other online payment platforms?
Yes, we accept all major credit cards for payments. You can also use Paypal to pay for your prayer flags.
How much do the Prayer Flags cost?
A roll of prayer flags from the tip of the stupa to the bottom with name personalization will cost $49.
